Shanda was first established as an online game company called, Shanda Interactive, in 1999. It was founded by the Chairman and CEO, Tianqiao Chen, and family members, with an initial investment of only US$60,000. The business grew rapidly as the industry burgeoned and was listed on the NASDAQ in 2004. Shanda Interactive invented the world's first free-to-play game model in 2005, which was initially criticized by naysayers, leading to a plunge in the stock price upon the launch of the new model.
