Overview

In 2021, Africa contributed less than 3% of global emissions, and 75% of people without energy access globally are in Africa. Between 2019 and 2020, there was $632 billion in climate finance, 93% of which went to climate mitigation while only 7% went to climate adaptation efforts. With so much emphasis on mitigation, it is not surprising that Sub- Saharan Africa only received $19 billion in climate finance, despite being the region that is least climate-resilient. At this rate, we will not achieve universal energy access and adequate adaptation levels to withstand the impacts of climate change.
