Today's small business owners are some of the most tech savvy individuals around. In fact, according to a recent survey by Discover card, these individuals lead smartphone penetration, with 34 percent owning one, compared to only 26 percent of consumers.
An additional survey by Staples has coined a new phrase for this phenomenon: "phonemance." The internet poll found that 60 percent of small business owners spend more time keeping up with breaking small business news and answering emails than holding their significant others' hands.
However, this increasing use of technology is not all bad - it allows small business owners to work from virtual offices and provides them with greater flexibility and freedom. For example, 52 percent of owners now feel comfortable going on vacation because they can stay "plugged-in," compared to 35 percent last year.
"Technology and mobile devices, in particular, can actually be good for family relationships, allowing Mom or Dad to stay plugged in with work while simultaneously attending events - ball games, school events - that were historically only possible for the non-working parent to attend," said Dr. Seth Meyers, a licensed clinical psychologist, relationship expert and author.
