Illinois Fair Tax Vs. Flat Tax: How Illinois Counties Will Benefit
Written by Ken Gaebler
Published: 9/2/2020
Everyone in Illinois who makes $250,000 or less will benefit from the Illinois Fair Tax. We take a look at how things shake out on a county-by-county basis.
The current tax system in Illinois is a flat tax system, enacted in 1969.
It allows millionaires and billionaires to pay the same tax rate as middle and lower-income Illinoisans.
The damage to the state for continuing to have a flat tax system is likely in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
In November, Illinois will vote on a constitutional amendment to move to a modern taxation system. The ballot initiative is called the Illinois Fair Tax, thus named because it addresses fundamental unfairness in the flat tax.
The Illinois Fair Tax will convert Illinois's tax system to be up-to-date with the graduated tax system used by a majority of states and the federal government. It will allow Illinois to be less reliant on property taxes and sales taxes which adversely impact the less fortunate. Most importantly, 97% of Illinoisans will see their taxes cut or remain the same.
It's a very important ballot initiative because votes on fundamental structural change only come up every fifteen to twenty years in Illinois. If it doesn't pass in 2020, it may not be on the ballot again until 2035, and by then the ongoing damage of having a flat tax system will likely have reduced Illinois to a shadow of its former self.
