Getting Twitter followers is a passion for many small businesses, but it turns out that the key is getting the right types of followers, according to one expert.
While many marketers try to get as many followers as possible on Twitter, the news for small business owners is that real Twitter followers means more influence and brand exposure. Donny Gamble's website said if you are a marketer or business who is primarily followed by peers, that may not be too helpful.
Michael Della Penna, managing director of StrongMail, said on ClickZ that the best way to start getting followers is to mine the business marketing database. He said to leverage the knowledge about existing customers to reach out to them on social media. After that, read what they have to say and follow them to get a clue as to what they want to read about.
Penna also suggests to use some Twitter tools, such as WeFollow.com, to find key influences in the industry or related topics and use Twitter's "who to follow" tab for some other users who discuss topics relating to the business.
Donny Gamble's website said to gain more followers, use hash tags, target other popular Twitter users, be genuine in what you tweet about and have patience.
"Take at least 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening to update your Twitter," he said, saying that over time this will help build up a Twitter influence.
