Dairy Queen (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berkshire-Hathaway, Inc.) has been offering fast food and of course the iconic soft-serve ice-cream desserts since 1940. Dairy Queen prides itself on being the kind of place where a little league team goes to celebrate a victory (or soothe a defeat with a Blizzard dessert). Their motto is "We Treat You Right."
In 1941 there were less than 10 Dairy Queen stores. Today there are 5,900 DQ's in the US, Canada, and 20 other countries.
Dairy Queen offers a broad menu of franchise choices, including: DQ Grill & Chill (a new flagship restaurant with regular DQ soft-serve and a full new menu), DQ/Orange Julius Treat Centers (the two lines combined into a single store, usually found in shopping malls), Orange Julius stores (with their traditional blended beverage offerings).
The type of franchise program you qualify for depends on your desire and experience. The Standard Program is a single-unit offering for those who have experience operating a restaurant or retail establishment, plus other qualifications. Serious restauranteurs looking to boost a portfolio with brand equity can investigate the Multi-unit Developer Program. The Investor Program is for those interested in owning a DQ restaurant but not being involved in the day-to-day operations. The Operator-to-Owner Program targets those who have experience managing one or more restaurants and would like to move up to owning one, or anyone who has recently graduated from business or culinary school.
